I’ve seen Emma Jean watching the other kids at lunch. As a middle school English teacher, I recognized these kids. If you spend any time in a middle school, you’ll love it because the characters are so real. If you’re a writer, you should read it because it’s a fantastic example of how to pull off changing points of view in third person narrative. Because Emma Jean is brilliant at math and logic, just like her father who died two years ago, she uses logic to find solutions to her classmates’ problems, with results that are hilarious and heartwarming. She reminds me a lot of Lisa Yee’s Millicent Min, Girl Genius. This is a big deal for all of us, but especially for Emma Jean, who’s one of those brilliant, wise-beyond-her-years kids who seems to watch everything from the sidelines. I’ve now officially read every book in the Harry Bosch series, Mickey Haller series, Jack McEvoy series, Terry McCaleb series, and the Renee Ballard series. They include: Mickey Haller – Bosch’s half brother, and the Lincoln Lawyer (obviously the book first, but the Matthew McConaughey movie character too), Jack McEvoy – a reporter that intersects with Harry a few times, Terry McCaleb – an FBI agent who works with Harry on a few cases, and whose death Harry investigates eventually, Renee Ballard – a detective who caught Harry rifling through old police files after he retired and then teamed up with him. Politically, he leaned toward the teachings of the late Scythe Goddard, for he enjoyed gleaning immensely and saw no reason why that should be a problem for anyone. And then he would end the subject’s life. After all, if a scythe must choose a figure from history to name oneself after, shouldn’t that figure be integrated somehow into the scythe’s life?
